Recognising rhythm (vibration) as the connecting thread between the material and non-material worlds, Ruth’s constructed drawings and shadow paintings transcribe how human biology connects with the mind and how both might connect to spirit.
“Utilising the woven medium as a grid and the metaphor of mapping, I chart my journey to inner peace. Weft represents my local consciousness, the horizontal path of earthly experience whether mental, emotional or physical. The luminous vertical warp strands represent numinous conduits to states of awareness difficult to grasp through noetic enquiry.
A cartography of feeling contours rhythms of the body, waves of emotion, pulses of thought and vibrations of spirit. The semiotics of thread became a scripture, a metaphorical transcript of an inner dialogue.
Together warp and weft make the whole cloth as I return to wholeness.”
Ruth’s contemporary artworks hang in space as dividers or screens and upon walls (framed and unframed) as constructed drawings, shadow paintings and digital prints. Construction techniques include hand spinning and weaving, dyeing, papermaking, Photoshop and the coiling of wires. I draw particular inspiration from Contemporary Japanese Fibre artists.
